Hair Extensions and Hair Replacements
Hair Extensions and Hair Replacements
Information about Hair ExtensionsHair extensions have grown in popularity over the last few years. With the TV shows "Extreme Makeover," "The Swan" and "American Idol" (that's how their hair grows so fast, just look at Paula Abdul's hair every week), hair extensions are more popular today than ever. Fortunately there are more trained hair extension artists than ever before. But sometimes you still have to travel hours to get to them if you can find them at all. Granted, hair extensions have been around for probably 35 years or more but the extensions that were used were mostly weaves, (braided and sewn in), and mostly in Ethnic salons. Weaves are still a great, and very often a more economical type of extension. They just don't work well in thin, silky Caucasian hair plus they can be very bulky.
About 20 years ago Mega came out with a keratin type hair extension bond that could be used to attach extension hair to clients hair in a free flowing, strand-by-strand method. This hair extension method was able to be used by all types of hair because of it's ability to adhere to any hair from silky to course plus you could chose the type of hair you wanted to use.
Not long after that SoCap and Great Lengths came out with pre-tipped hair extensions. This simplified the extension process by having the hair and bond, (the "glue" that attaches it to the hair although in most cases it is not a glue at all), all in one. There are many different companies manufacturing a similar product to Great Lengths and So.Cap.
Eurolocs and Hairlocs are a type of extension that uses a ring that is crimped to hold the hair extensions onto your hair. This is a popular type of extension now because it can be reused, (check with your hair extensionist about this). I have tried to mention a few hair extension types. Not all techniques will work for all people so it is best to seek out an experienced hair extension artist or 2 and have a consultation first.
Information on Hair Replacements & Hair Pieces for Men and Women
Hair extensions are great to give your hair more fullness and length. But sometimes you need more coverage because the hair on the top of your head is too thin to properly cover the hair extension bonds, this is where a hair replacement or hair piece comes in. Please don't let the thought of a hair piece scare you. The way they are made today they are very natural and undetectable. Hair pieces can be custom made to perfectly blend in with your hair color and perfectly fit the contours of your head. For women the hair replacement can be long or short to blend into your hair and in no way looks like a wig. I wish more women would give this a technology a chance because it can drastically improve the look and self esteem of a person. No one will ever know you have it on! Hair pieces can be taken on and off at home with the use of clips or toupee tape or can be more permanently attached at a salon. Retightening would be needed every 4-5 weeks
Another alternative is a non-surgical hair graft. (Mostly used on men but may be used on women) A non surgical hair graft is accomplished by attaching a hair system (the hair appears to grow directly from your own scalp) to your scalp with a surgical type glue and then cutting the hair so that it blends in with the already healthy growing hair. By using human hair and coloring it to match existing hair the system really can and normally does look totally natural. This procedure is not nearly as expensive as surgical hair implantation but it does require constant maintenance that can be on the pricey side.
Surgical hair transplants: Hair transplants consist of removal of tiny plugs of hair from areas where the hair is continuing to grow and placing them in areas that are balding. This can cause minor scarring in the donor areas and carries a small risk for skin infection. The procedure usually requires multiple transplantation sessions and may be expensive. Results, however, are often excellent and permanent. Hair transplants are only preformed by doctors. Hair pieces, non-surgical hair grafts and hair extensions are available at qualified salons.
